2012 Environmental Expo at Philpott Dam

Friends of Philpott organizes an environmental expo every year. It's a family friendly event featuring games and activities that teach children and adults to appreciate the world around them. There was food, a petting zoo, booths, and of course, Lenny the owl. I was too busy posing for pictures and talking to people to take any photos during the event, but my brother managed to capture some for me while setting up.

The girls were stunned, seeing an owl up close for the first time.

I'm always happy to provide children with the unique opportunity to pet an owl.

Who Am I?

I'm Aviane. I'm the daughter of a falconer. Birds have been my life from the moment my parents named me (Avian is latin for bird). My parents met at the National Audubon Society, they released an owl at their wedding, and became falconers while my mother was pregnant with me. My parents marriage ended, but my relationship with birds never has.

Now I'm on the board of directors for an enviromental group, Friends of Philpott. I work with wonderful people doing wonderful things, for the enviroment and for our community. We just opened a wheel chair accessable park and are raising money for a lift to the beach.

I travel around with the birds educating people on birds of prey, the environment, and the devestating effect deforestation as on wildlife. It's rewarding work and I love working with people, particularly teaching children. It's touching to see a child touch an owl for the first time. I want to help people appreciate these beautiful creatures.
This is me
